'A storyteller who knows the humour, the fear and the frenzy of men in battle.' - Bernard Cornwall

1882. The Irish Republican Brotherhood (the Fenians) are fighting for independence from the UK.

As Doctor Watson is walking back towards Parliament Square, two carriages collide in a serious accident. He rushes to help – and simultaneously a novel dynamite device is discovered outside the Home Office and defused before it can go off.

During a subsequent visit to Sherlock Holmes, Watson receives a telegram from the Royal Irish Constabulary, asking him to visit Ireland, and the two earlier incidents start to seem related.

Once in Ireland, Watson and his own sidekick Bowler, find themselves embroiled in an assassination plot and are kidnapped by Fenian rebels.

Can the two Englishmen escape from the rebel gang in time to prevent further murders?

Doctor Watson's Terror is part of Patrick Mercer's bestselling series of Doctor Watson adventures that include Doctor Watson's War, Doctor Watson's Bout and Doctor Watson’s Charge.

Praise for Patrick Mercer’s books

'The style is rougher and more forceful than we're used to, being untouched by Conan Doyle's editorial hand, but it suits the subject matter admirably. You just know that this is what it was like.' - Roger Johnson, The District Messenger on Doctor Watson's War

‘A tremendous achievement by a storyteller who knows the humour, the fear and the frenzy of men in battle,’ Bernard Cornwell

'A finely-drawn depiction of battle and the camaraderie of war' - The Daily Mail of To Do and Die.

Patrick Mercer is author of the Anthony Morgan Trilogy, To Do and Die, Dust and Steel and Red Runs the Helmand, as well as a number of straight histories of Victoria's wars. A military historian by training, he was decorated four times as an infantry officer and then was the defence correspondent for BBC Radio 4's Today Programme.

I am a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson and found this short work true to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's depiction of the great detective and his faithful assistant. These novels place Dr. Watson - and his own faithful assistant - at the center of attention - and deservedly so! Patrick Mercer has resurrected Holmes and Watson for the enjoyment of a reading audience - new and old - obsessed with crime and crime-solving in 19th Century England.

Doctor Watson Terror The Doctor Watson Adventures Book 4 eBook Patrick Mercer Reviews

Wasn't a lot of plot, and no real mystery to it, but I'll read other books in the series.
A strong series. Author accentuates how character was originally a soldier and that, more than Holmes, Watson is a lady's man. Dialogue and writing are of a high standard, although plot flagged a bit in middle. Preferred Watson's Bout and Charge but can recommend series to general readers, as well as to Holmes fans.
Mr. Mercer departs from The Canon on a number of points, and a proofreader would have been helpful, but the story was action-packed and well worth reading. I enjoyed it.
