Silence is said to be golden. When it comes to comedy though, silence can be deadly. Tim Boyle began performing stand-up comedy when he was in high school. It didn’t take more than a few seconds after entering a comedy club for the first time before realizing you need a thick skin to survive. Open mics, free bar shows, and New York City comedy clubs, Tim has failed on stage at them all. He’s been booed, banned, and had 200 high school kids throw gum at him. Silence My Worst Stand-Up Comedy Performances and Experiences chronicles his most cringe worthy stories about the times when things in his comedy career didn't go as planned. Honest, mean-spirited, and sometimes embarrassingly sad, this collection of stories is about one man's failed attempt at bringing joy to the world. Who said the pain of others can’t be funny?

Silence My Worst StandUp Comedy Performances and Experiences Tim Boyle 9781482396577 Books

Tim is a man who represents everything wrong with the world of amateur stand-up comedy. He performs infrequently, believes he is above the shows he performs at, makes fun of other comedians who are different than him in any way, is frequently hypocritical, and expresses sexist, racist, and homophobic viewpoints. Most importantly, he is not funny, and simply resorts to making disgusting shock jokes without any clarity, set-up or context. If the audience didn't laugh because you made a joke about performing fellatio on your father, that's probably not their fault. His writing style conveys not just an immaturity, but an anti-maturity, an attitude that claims that things must change for him if he wants to achieve his goals, and if they don't, there must be something wrong with them, and I will take my toys and leave. He has done the world of comedy a favor by retiring. He could never handle the business because it requires a thick skin and a sense of modesty. He is a blogger, and I imagine the experience of his blog is akin to attending the daycare room of a Klan rally. The editing is poor. Chapters are largely redundant, ideas are half-baked, and nearly every paragraph ends with a snarky sentence recapping the paragraph with a joke about fecal matter, homophobic stereotypes, or slut-shaming. Tim stole a dollar of my money, but the advice I give him now will be much more valuable - never return.

Silence My Worst StandUp Comedy Performances and Experiences Tim Boyle 9781482396577 Books Reviews

I'm a huge fan of Tim's blog, and reading this book was a delightful window into the past that's made the man. He weaves a great narrative, interjecting his worst moments into the timeline and giving his reader a good sense of how he progressed as a comedian without getting lost in the details. He kept me rooting for him, even in his most mortifying moments and made me laugh out loud on a page by page basis.

I'd recommend this to anyone who loves stand-up, has ever dreamed of being a performer, has ever experienced an alienating moment or really anyone who enjoys humor (if you don't, you might not be human). Buy this book today... seriously, buy it.
Tim Boyle runs the immensely popular (in my household of 1) Kidz Showz blog, and when he isn't, he's writing books. He's already written at least 3 books compared to 90% of people who have written 0 books, so he's a lot better than you and I. Unless you are Kurt Vonnegut. in which case, death must be hella boring if you're reading reviews. He may have written more books, but I'm too lazy to even look up how many books he's written, but that's more of a statement on me than on how awesome Tim is.

The point is, this book is a great look at the life of an aspiring stand-up comedian, mostly focusing on the pitfalls instead of the glorious cocaine parties, but always reminding you that 1) regardless of outcome, putting yourself out there is a victory versus not trying to do something you think you'd enjoy; and 2)you learn more from your failures than your successes. While the book may have been punched up if he included some of his material, Jesus Christ, he already wrote 77 pages, what more do you want? You're probably one of those guys who heckles comedians at open mics because you feel your two drink minimum makes you a part of the show. Just kill yourself. But don't be a total dick; buy a copy of the book first.
Tim Boyle is an interesting writer who blends deep, thought out satire with jokes that you can tell he blurted out just to try and catch you off guard. And it works. His books read like the streamlined thoughts of an IBM super computer set to tell dirty jokes. Wait... can super computers THINK? This has honestly been a fear of mine for a long time. We've all seen The Terminator, as well as the much more realistic and emotionally compelling I,Robot (staring the modern day Sidney Poitier, Mr Will Smith), but what's really behind the mind of a super computer? I mean, that one beat out Ken Jennings, and that guy was like, all smart and stuff. But back to Tim...

"Silence My Worst Stand-Up Comedy Performances and Experiences" is a unique story of a guy who broke through the fear that anyone who's been told "You're pretty funny!" by some dumb blonde bimbo has had. Many of us are funny (or think we are, but probably aren't) but a select few have the courage to get up there and form it into 5, 10 or 15 mins of well thought out, organized material. I, myself, have learned something about my stand up career from this book Just don't even try. It's not worth it. No one actually finds you funny, they just give you courtesy laughs because they feel bad for you. Stop. Go get an office job and give up your "dream", if you can even call it that, of selling out venues around the world. You're not Dane Cook. You're not Louis CK. You're BARELY Carlos Mencia. Go lie down on train tracks, you zero.

Great read. I'd pay $5 for it.
This book is a must-read for anyone who had fought and lost. That means everyone past Justin Bieber fan age. With a bare-all, punch-in-the-gut combos writing style that could either make you laugh out loud or whimper in agony, this book is as much funny as it is sad. And the combination is lethal, completely fulfilling what it has set out to do.

DO NOT expect for glory moments. Cringe-worthy, "Oh shi-that's just like me!", "Uugh, yuck!", "Gosh. I'm glad it's not me", "Awww, poor Timmy, he's so young to have LUNG CANCER...", "WHAT THE F^#@!"-those are the moments you should watch out for.

It's like a Friday night My Life Sucks session with your long lost crazy (in a good way) friend.

Hilarious, wise, gut-wrenching, a REAL book with as much forgivable faults (i.e. minor glitches in grammar, no actual photos of the author taking it on-stage-bah...) as a real person-this is a book both stand-up comedians and people who haven't even seen the insides of a comedy club (i.e. me) will enjoy.

If you have/had a dream and did/doing all you could to reach that very elusive star, this book's also for you. If you're someone who frequently have those "I wish the ground will open up and eat me"-embarrassing moments or if you're a young, aspiring comedian, then what the freak are you still waiting for?!
